Help Cats on National Cat Day and Beyond!

Today is National Cat Day – which means your Facebook feed and twitter stream will be filled with adorable cats. But do you know where you can see an adorable cat everyday? Your house! And we can help. We currently have over 100 cats and kittens that are looking for permanent homes. So we’ve put together a quick guide on how YOU can help us help more cats:

ADOPT
First and foremost, consider adopting a cat. LDCRF found homes for over 500 cats in 2012, but need your help to save even more in 2013 – nearly half the cats entering shelters in the state of VA are being euthanized, according to Virginia Department of Agriculture 2012 statistics. At LDCRF, we work with shelters to pull cats and kittens that would otherwise be euthanized, and find them homes in the DC metro area. We work with shelters on a regular basis so that we help them lower their euthanasia rate long term, not just short term. When you adopt a cat from LDCRF, you’re saving two lives. You’re not only helping the cat you adopt by providing them a permanent home, but you’re allowing us to save another cat from euthanasia.

Take a look at the many cats we have up for adoption right now here. You can also email cats@lostdogrescue.org if you have questions about the cats we have up for adoption. We offer same day adoptions with a two week money back trial period, to ensure that it is a good fit. This is especially helpful if you already have other animals at home that your new friend will be introduced to.  All cats are already spayed or neutered, combo tested and given age appropriate vaccines.

We have cat adoption centers located at the Reston, Tyson’s Corner and Leesburg Petsmart where you can go anytime to see some of the great cats up for adoption. Cats are also available for adoption at the following adoption events (for location details click here):
Fridays at the Tyson’s Corner Petsmart from 6:30-8:30pm
Saturdays at the Seven Corners Petsmart from 12-3pm
Sundays at the Leesburg Petsmart from 1-4pm
Sundays at the Reston Petsmart from 1-4pm
Sundays at the Tyson’s Corner Petsmart from 1-4pm

FOSTER
This is a great option for those who cannot adopt but still want to help. Fosters provide a temporary home for a cat or kittens, and make a huge difference. Unlike most of our dogs, cats don’t see adoption events as a fun outing to meet new people. Because of this, foster parents can make a difference by talking to potential adopters about how the cats are in a home environment. They can also take photos that show off the cats personality. All cats are already vetted and fixed, and we have many cats that would benefit greatly from a foster home. Interested in fostering? Fill out the quick cat foster application here, and then check out some of the cool cats looking for foster homes here.

VOLUNTEER
We are always in need of volunteers to help play with socialize cats at our adoption centers, and spruce up their cages, cleaning litter boxes and giving them their food and toys. Our adoption centers are located in Reston, Tyson’s Corner and Leesburg. If you’re interested in volunteering to help email cats@lostdogrescue.org. Even if you can’t attend an event, consider making flyers up for a cat currently up for adoption, and help market them both online and offline.

SPONSOR
Sponsoring a cat is a great way to help LDCRF offset the cost of caring for the cats looking for a home. For a $50 donation, your name will appear on that cat’s profile as their Pal for Paws sponsor, and your tax deductible donation will go to help pay for medical expenses. Here are just a few that are still looking for sponsors (and of course adopters!):

It’s Time to Trick or Treat for LDCRF!

trick_or_treater_4pwbw_rIts Trick or Treat 2013 and we need YOU to make this the biggest and best year yet! Each year, our volunteers sign up to trick or treat for Lost Dog, asking friends, family, coworkers and neighbors to donate $10 for dogs and cats awaiting homes. All proceeds go to animal care AND, for every $100 raised, the volunteer gets to name a cat or dog.

Donations can be made on-line using our special Trick or Treat website, or by cash or check. Sassy TORT Sassy’s suited up and ready to Trick or Treat for Lost Dog! Please help her raise $10,000 for animal care. Trick-or-treating officially starts this Friday, October 25, 2013 and runs through Halloween week, ending November 3, 2013. Our goal is to bring in $10,000.

That’s a big number, but that also translates in to a lot of care for dogs and cats who need homes. Simply put, we’d love for you to join our team of Trick or Treaters. We’ll make it real easy for you by sending you all the information you will need to participate. All you have to do is trick or treat! Please consider joining in the fun with Lost Dog and help us raise an unprecedented amount for animal care!

Signing up is easy. Just fill out the form below or email Colleen Learch at trickortreat@lostdogrescue.org.

You’ll then receive your virtual Halloween basket with all the information you need to start trick or treating. And, if you have questions at any point, we’re happy to help! On behalf of all the dogs and cats who want a great treat this Halloween, thank you!!
